Township life and the World Cup

Atteridgeville, 12 June 2010. Following an invitation from the German Embassy in Pretoria, some 30 German journalists joined a township tour through Atteridgeville on Saturday, 12 June 2010. Accompanied by representatives from the Embassy, InWent, DED, GTZ and community peace workers of GTZ’s ‘Peace and Development Programme’, the journalists visited both the well-established areas of Atteridgeville and informal settlements. The township is situated west of Pretoria and forms part of the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality. Atteridgeville, with its vast citizen count of 250,000, is well known for its Super Stadium where Premier Soccer League matches are played. The stadium, which was only recently renamed after legendary Pretoria soccer player Lucas ‘Masterpieces’ Moripe, is currently hosting the training of the German National Football Team.
